‘We need the coldness to finish teams off’

Joe Montemurro was disappointed after our 0-0 draw at Reading, but he refuses to rule us out of the title race after we dropped 10 points behind league leaders Manchester City.

Here’s what the manager said after the game:

on the performance…

I thought the second half was very good, whereas in the first half we struggled to find our rhythm and the distances got a little bit long. We just didn’t take care of the ball well in the opening 45 minutes, but following the break I thought we did enough to win the game. All credit to Reading, though, they created a lot of chances which could have pipped it the other way.

on keeping a clean sheet…

I suppose it’s important not to concede goals and that’s the main thing defensively. Structurally we were pretty sound and they got through on a couple of rebounds and follow-throughs, but they didn’t really break us per se. Look, it’s always a positive not to concede but if we were to find some continuity and get into our rhythm quicker it would be better for all.

on what went wrong going forward…

Part of the game is finishing your chances and that’s an important skill. To have the coldness to do it and finish teams off is something you need to learn. You have your good days and you have your bad days, but as I said I thought the opportunities were there to win it.

on the league title…

I don’t think we’ve gotten past the halfway mark yet, so I think it’s a little too early to tell and we’ll keep fighting for it to the end and believing to the end. There’s a lot of football to be played and we’ll come out and perform.
