‘We need away wins in order to reach the top four’

Bernd Leno

Bernd Leno knows that we need to improve our record on the road.

Sunday’s defeat at Manchester City means we’ve still only won four of our 12 Premier League away games this season, a stark contrast to the 10 times we’ve secured all three points at Emirates Stadium from 13 attempts.

Leno discussed our current form, a slow start at the Etihad and more after the game. This is what he said:

on the result…

I think the game started very badly, with a goal. And it ended with a goal for Man City and I think in the first half we played very good and we conceded two easy goals. In the second half, we didn't have the power to play against them because they had the ball all the time and we were running. We fought until the end but today, Manchester City did a very good job.

on the difficult of conceding so early on…

Yes, of course. It was very hard. But the reaction of the team was brilliant. We scored the goal from a corner and I think it was the worst time to concede the second goal, just before half-time.

on whether Man City's third goal touched Sergio Aguero's arm…

It was so quick. I saw Aguero and I saw that he touched the ball with his arm or hand, I'm not sure. I'm not sure if he wanted to touch the ball. Maybe if we were luckier, the referee would see that. But he didn't see it, so we couldn't change it.

on focusing on future games…

Yes, of course. We need wins like today, to go back to the top four but I think we are still in a good position to go to the top four. We still have big games and I think we need more away wins, because at home we play very good. We win many games at home, but I think to go into the top four again we need more away wins.
