‘We have to thank our fans for sticking with us’

Leah Williamson

Our resolve was tested to the final whistle in the FA WSL Continental Cup final, but our fans’ support helped us hold out for a historic fifth title.

It was also our seventh consecutive clean sheet, and Leah Williamson took the chance to pay tribute to our unrivalled support inside Adams Park.

“Everything a football club runs on is because of the fans,” she told Arsenal.com.  “They are amazing and they’ve stuck with us. It’s been a tough couple of years even though we’ve managed to bring silverware home, but nights like this are really special for the fans.

“They follow us up and down the country and what an opportunity to perform like that and give them a game to remember. First half we played out of our skin, we nailed the game plan and we gave them some problems. We know City are a good side and we knew we had to deliver on our part.

“In the second half we were obviously under the cosh from the first minute and we didn’t really take control of the game again. We had a couple of players out there that hadn’t played for weeks.

“It was all about digging in and displaying our character. Realistically we were solid and we prevented them from even creating chances. I think we can be really proud of ourselves.”
