Under-21s: Nelson scores penalty in England draw

Reiss Nelson

England ended their Under-21 Euro campaign on Monday evening.

Reiss Nelson played the full 90 minutes and scored as the Young Lions were held to a 3-3 draw by Croatia in Serravalle, San Marino.

Aidy Boothroyd’s side knew they would be going home after this game, following defeats in their opening two games, but they still started the brighter side.

Phil Foden picked out Nelson in the box, who cut inside Bran Kalaica before the defender brought him down. Our teenage forward stepped up to roll the spot-kick into the bottom corner for his third goal in six England Under-21 appearances.

James Maddison and Jonjoe Kenny were also on target for the Young Lions, but two goals from Josip Brekalo and a third from Nikola Vlasic ensured England would be going home with just one point to their name.

Elsewhere in Group C, Matteo Guendouzi played the full 90 minutes in France’s goalless draw with leaders Romania.

The share of points meant both teams qualified for the semi-finals, with Romania facing Germany on Thursday at 5pm (UK) before Guendouzi’s France take on Spain at 8pm.
