Unai’s press conference: Emery single word!

Unai Emery’s stock has risen even further after orchestrating a stunning win in his first north London derby.

Less than a day after we kicked off against Tottenham, our head coach was back in front of reporters to reflect on that 4-2 win and look ahead to another huge test against Manchester United.

Unai - with his English improving all the time - also discussed Lucas Torreira, the Premier League’s frontrunners, Aaron Ramsey’s future and Mesut Ozil’s fitness.

Here’s a full transcript from his press conference:

on his derby reflections…

I haven’t finished my analysis of the game, I need more time because I started this morning but then we trained and after I’ve been with you [the media], so I will continue the analysis. The picture is better but we are very demanding of ourselves to find more things to improve. For example we conceded two goals and we need to improve in these situations defensively. I think there were more positive things yesterday.

on how much he enjoyed his first derby…

I enjoyed the big atmosphere from every supporter because I know it’s special for them. After, I was calm and I knew it was three points. So it was a good first experience of the derby against Tottenham. But today is Monday, tomorrow is Tuesday and Wednesday we are travelling to Manchester for a very big match and a big challenge for us.

on Torreira winning three man-of-the-match awards in four games…

I think it’s amazing, all the performances of the players. Individually we want that they can recognise good matches with scoring, with getting better in each match. I think Torreira deserved this moment for helping us.

on if his expectations for the season have changed based on performances and results…

We are speaking every day about how we can do our way. We weren’t happy when we drew three matches [in a row]. In that moment, we are very demanding to change that moment. Now we’ve won our last two matches in the Premier League. In this moment, we have the same points as Tottenham but we are travelling to Manchester United on Wednesday and we need to keep our [level of] performance and improve. We know - you maybe better than me - that it’s very difficult to win there. I prefer every day to work, thinking about the next matches. At the moment, we have the consistency in our mentality. We are calm, we know we need to improve and enjoy each moment, like yesterday. It’s a short moment though, today we are working and thinking about Wednesday.

on if Arsenal are title contenders…

At the moment, one thing is clear: some teams have an advantage [over] us. One is very clear, it’s Manchester City. The difference between their points and our points. But also for the goals and conceding goals, there’s a big difference to us. Another difference [is] between Liverpool and our moments [which are] not very big, but I think it’s an important difference also. With the performances, with the points, with the goals scored and conceded, we are the same as Chelsea and Tottenham - that’s the reality. We want to progress and not think about them, but think about the next match. The Premier League is the first competition for us, but we also have very exciting [prospects] in the Europa League, Carabao Cup and the FA Cup. I want us to do one way, to think about the possibility - maybe not this year, because it’s difficult - but [in time], to approach one title here with the team. It’s about progress, improving and our demands.

on the tactical change against Tottenham and if Ramsey could stay…

Two months ago we spoke together, both for his moment, his present and future. I think it was a very good conversation. I said to you also here in the press conference that I want his focus only on the team, on giving us his performances. His present is as I want, and his future is very important for him and his family. We need calm and to do the difference between his future and his present now. I think in the last matches his focus [is there]. We were speaking between us [the coaches] and I look at him in every match. His focus is positive for us, it helps us. He needs to think about his future, for his family and for him. If he plays like yesterday, it’s the best for him and the best for us.

on if Ramsey could stay…

This conversation is not for today for us or for me. It’s one situation that was closed one or two months ago. At the moment the most important thing is he’s smiling, he has the commitment, the behaviour and the performances like Sunday - that’s the best for him and for us.

on the latest on Ozil and his injury…

I said yesterday he’s had backache since last Tuesday. He couldn’t play in Kiev or yesterday. At the moment, I don’t know if he can play in Manchester.

on if Mesut trained today…

Today he was working alone, I don’t know if he’s OK for Wednesday.

on a banana being thrown after Auba’s first goal in the derby…

I don’t accept this behaviour, and nobody accepts it. I think the [police] are doing their work.

on if Auba was upset about it…

I haven’t spoken to him [about it].

on going to Old Trafford and what he expects…

It’s a new match, a new challenge, a big challenge. It’s away and we need to continue improving our mentality away. We know we need to change to get more competitive away. I think the team is doing that, but it’s a new challenge because we’re going to play against Manchester United away, and the challenge is bigger than other matches. For us, it’s a very exciting match. The preparation for this match is also a big motivation for us. It gives me a big motivation for Wednesday. If we are stronger now, we need to [show that] on Wednesday.

on Mata calling Emery special - and if he’s surprised by Man United’s position…

He’s a very good player and a very good person, I had a very good experience with him in Valencia at the beginning of his career. Then he came to the Premier League and I think he’s a very important player here, first at Chelsea, then at Manchester United. It’s not normal where they are in the table. They have a lot of potential and experience with the coach, who has a big experience in the Premier League, in Europe, in world football. We respect them a lot individually and collectively, and we know it’s a very difficult match away.

on fans singing ‘we’ve got our Arsenal back’ and him leading a revolution…

I can feel proud, but above all, I think we need not to stop. To me… we need to improve things, because it’s very demanding in the Premier League, with big players, with big teams. I’m proud but I want to continue with humility on our way.

on Leno praising his half-time teamtalk v Tottenham…

First, it was about being calm. We changed small details but what’s been most important for me at half-time is to be calm, to give them confidence, because maybe yesterday we were 1-0 up and then we finished the half 2-1 down. Give them confidence on the best moments in the first half, to repeat that in the second half. Change something special - I changed two players at half-time, but not because Iwobi and Mkhitaryan were doing badly, but because we needed to change and push with different players. I explained yesterday that Aaron has experience in derbies like yesterday, and the second was that I thought we could do better with players with the capacity to score against them.

on him describing himself as a coward when he was a player - and being less tolerant of that in his own players…

I know how you can feel playing under pressure. When I was a player, I played a lot of games with this pressure individually and collectively. I know when the players can feel like me in this moment. That’s why it’s first for me to give them confidence, which you cannot buy in the supermarket! You need to create it every day in the conversations and between us. You find that working a lot every day and being together, doing positive things, speaking, training, playing. That’s most important, how you can break that pressure, is with confidence. If our demands are bigger than the pressure, it’s also one way to improve, and when the players can block these negative pressure.
