U20 World Cup heartbreak for Brazil and Marquinhos

Marquinhos contests a ball with Israel's Stav Lemkin

Marquinhos' hopes of U20 World Cup glory were scuppered as Brazil suffered an extra-time loss to Israel in the quarter-finals of the competition.

Following a goalless first half, the Selecao were the first to strike before the hour mark through Marcos Leonardo. Israel responded almost immediately, however, as El-Yam Kancepolsky's soaring cross was met by Anan Khalaili's terrific leaping header.

It remained 1-1 when the whistle blew on 90 minutes, forcing the two sides to duke it out further in extra time. Brazil took less than 30 seconds to retake the lead with a sublime team goal - acrobatic passes and rapid footwork giving Matheus Nascimento the perfect opportunity to strike.

But Israel weren't done yet. Hamza Shibli equalised two minutes later before Dor Turgeman danced through the Brazilian defence to give Israel the lead for the first time all game.

Marquinhos played the full 90 minutes plus extra time as his team tried to find a way back into the game and despite a missed and retaken penalty for Israel, the score remained 3-2.

In Saturday evening's other quarter-final, Colombia were dispatched by Italy with our academy goalkeeper Alexei Rojas on the bench for the Colombians.
