'Torreira is young... but he is doing very well'

Torreira

Aaron Ramsey, Alex Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang may get the headlines after our win at Fulham, but how good was Lucas Torreira?

The Uruguayan International was superb in midfield, and after Unai Emery reflected on his start to life in the Premier League.

This is what he said:

on how impressed he has been by Torreira's form…
He’s very young, it's his first season here at this level but he was playing in Italy which is a very hard competition also. He is playing also with his national team, against big teams. And here, I think with his process he's doing very well. The first is his humility to work every day, to listen, to learn. He is playing today in the middle, then right in the 4-4-2 and his performance is the same. I think his career is just starting and we want to do it with him, he can do it with us, giving us and giving him the best performances at the best level.

on Mesut Ozil’s back spasm…
Yesterday he came in with pain and he cannot train yesterday or play today.

on whether he’s worried that players will pick up injuries with all the travelling…
Each training also he can [do it]. For example [we had players playing today who played on Thursday] like Nacho Monreal, Holding, Iwobi and Danny Welbeck. I think with preparation they have the capacity to play a lot of matches. They are at a big level in the matches and every player wants to play. They’re preparing for that.

on the relationship between Auba and Laca…
It is one process, to know better after training, after every match, after every decision, how we are better on the pitch, between the players, in our tactical system and impose our timing on the pitch in possession with the ball. Today is the first we played more clearly 4-4-2 with Danny and Lacazette first, and then Laca with Auba. Then Aaron is like a 10 player, but he can play near the attack and he can score or do an assist like today.

on whether the international break is coming at the wrong time…
Every international break is important also for international team and for the players because they want to stay with their national team and defend the team. For us it’s also about continuing our work but with (more calmness) because we have two weeks, but my idea and focus is Leicester. Two weeks is more time to prepare for this match and rest some week like this week Saturday and Sunday, but for us it’s time for continuing our work everyday with [calmness].

on whether he was worried about returning late from the Europa League…
No, because I think our players have the habits to play a lot of matches in the week and we want it. We arrived very late but Friday we had off to rest the players and Saturday in the morning the first competition for us is speaking about the match today and we worked 24 hours very concentrated to win against Fulham in this match. For us and the players in the international break they are going to play Wednesday, Thursday and travel. Lucas I think is travelling to Asia, so it’s a very long travel, but the players are at a high level and can play like that.

Watch the goals from our five-star win at Fulham

We made it nine straight wins after a stylish display at Craven Cottage saw us beat Fulham 5-1, with Aaron Ramsey finishing a sweeping team move to score an early goal of the season contender.

Alex Lacazette gave us the lead during the first half, but Andre Schurrle equalised on the stroke of the break. Lacazette restored our advantage shortly after half-time, before Ramsey backheeled home a third after a flowing team move had seen us cut open the hosts on the counter.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang came off the bench to add two more goals in the closing stages, putting the seal on a highly-convincing performance.

You can now watch highlights from Craven Cottage above, while all the goals plus a full match replay are available to view below.

Iwobi - We're not afraid of facing anyone

Alex Iwobi

Alex Iwobi's fine start to the season continued at Craven Cottage as we ran out 5-1 winners against Fulham on Sunday.

Afterwards, he spoke to the media about the performance, his own displays and the confidence in the squad.

This is what he said:

on what he made of the performance...
It was a tough start. Fulham came out and started well, but then they conceded. The manager picked us up at half-time.

on what the foundation of this good form is...
The team spirit is better. The confidence is definitely better. We analyse the games a bit more and we're proving to the fans as well as ourselves that we're able to compete for the title.

on the first half and his work on the left-hand side...
The manager has given me a lot of confidence, telling me that when I get the ball to just be positive. Whenever I am called upon to play, I always try to give my best and make sure that I can impose myself on the game.

on which goal he thought was best...
Ooh, I don't know! There were a lot of team goals, but I think the third one, where Hector flicked it, then Aaron passed it. There was a lot of good team play, but it doesn't matter who scored it, it's basically a team goal to me.

on there being a lot of confidence and smiles among the team and whether the result sends out a message...
Yes, of course. We're not afraid to play anyone. We're playing without fear, we want to be consistent and keep it going.

on being one point off top spot and if we can challenge for the title...
Well of course! But there's a long way to go. It's a marathon, so we just have to carry on being consistent.

'Our mentality is to work and enjoy it together'

Unai Emery

Five goals, three different scorers and one contender for goal of the season: Sunday's 5-1 win at Craven Cottage could scarcely have gone much better.

Unai Emery however, is remaining calm - and he says the mentality of the team is to enjoy the results of the hard work they are putting in off the pitch.

This is what he told the media afterwards:

on whether it was our best performance under him…
I don’t think of this performance like it is the best. But it depends each match on how it happens on the pitch in the 90 minutes, when we scored the first goal is the moment we can play with more confidence on the pitch and the opposition maybe didn’t have the mentality to continue pushing because we are okay. I think 90 minutes and the first half is open, and it was more difficult to defend and we worked very hard and in the second half we imposed ourselves with our possession and we had more capacity to score. We are happy but we are also calm because we know each match is difficult and today we are happy and we are going to continue with this process with humility and with this victory.

on the fans reacting well to the football…
We need to fit together with the supporters, with the club and the players and this mentality is very important for us and to show them our quality and strong work. Then together we can be happy, like today. We need their support, and they support us at every match and away from home. Even today, it is in London, but it is away and I think the players on the pitch feel their support every moment of the 90 minutes.

on whether he thought it would be possible to win nine games in a row...
But sorry, I don't want to look behind. I think every match is different, every match is very difficult. Yes, we are on the table, little by little, giving ourselves a better position for our ideas and our objectives. But I'm thinking of our match against Leicester, at the Emirates, our home, with our supporters. And I want to give them, when we are playing in our stadium, a special feeling with each match and show them we are playing with our quality, playing together with a winning mentality also. Above all, with the commitment and with the behaviour like today.

on only being one point off the top and whether we can win the title...
We lost the first two matches against Manchester City and Chelsea. When we are winning now, continuing in matches, we need to be in the same way. I think our mentality: calm, work, enjoy and enjoy working, together as one thing with our supporters like today. But improving individually, improving collectively and also finding our best performance in each match and the combinations with the players and the system also. Because, we need to continue improving and we can.

on what he liked most about today...
We spoke yesterday, the day before the match. We played Thursday and the time is very short, but we want it like that. We want not to stop thinking and winning in each match. The concentration is one thing that we need every time. When we are arriving at training or at the matches, to push a lot. I think today, not only the players in the first 11, but also in the bench. We won a lot of matches with the players, where they are starting in the match but they are playing 20, 25 or 30 minutes and helping us. Today is the same. The players, they are playing, like Aubameyang and Aaron Ramsey and Matteo, when they are in the side they are continuing helping us with their quality and continuing together in this way.

Auba - I knew I had to make an impact

Aubameyang celebrates against Fulham

For the first time in Premier League history, two substitutes both scored and claimed assists as we beat Fulham 5-1 on Sunday.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was one of those men, and after the game him and Alex Lacazette discussed the performance and their respective goalscoring feats.

on whether it was an almost perfect game…
AL: It was hard. It was a bit hard at the start but we scored many goals, we were compact and we won, so it’s the perfect thing.

on making a difference off the bench…
PEA: Yes, we did! I think we played very well and we knew that Fulham play good football and they play a lot on the counter, but I think the team played well. I came in and I knew I had to make the difference and I did it, so it’s good!

on the danger of giving Auba and Laca chances inside the box…
AL: We won today because we were efficient and we knew there would be a lot of chances before the game. Auba came on and scored some goals so he did it and everyone is happy!

on how far this run can go…
PEA: I think we have to keep this mentality. We have a great team spirit and as you can see on the pitch we’re playing well in this moment so we will try to keep our focus and continue winning games!

on whether Ramsey scored the best goal of the game…
AL: The best thing is that we scored!
