Renee Slegers has spoken of the importance of Wednesday's win against Valerenga in the UEFA Women's Champions League.
Aside from the performance, our interim head coach was also pleased with the character shown by our squad during a time of adjustment
"It was a very important one, obviously from a Champions League perspective, but also for the players," said Renee. "We've been going through a lot the last couple of days."
"I think the players should get a lot of credit. I know they got together as a group as well and spoke about things, how they want to do things better and differently themselves. They had some self-reflection as well. So I think I’m happy for them that it comes out today and now the challenge is to maintain that."
Emily Fox's goal in the second minute of play gave us the dream start we were looking for.
"It's obviously nice that the goal comes early, the second comes quite early as well. The game stays open for quite a long time, but I'm happy we got the last two goals in as well.
"Valerenga came out and pressed really high. They go player for player, which, if you bypass that really well, you get really good 1v1 opportunities, and then you're through, and you're gone. If you do, if you're not successful, then you get into trouble.
"That was the main theme at half-time that we spoke about. To tweak a little bit in that, tweak some details. And I think basically what did well in the second half. It was a tough opposition. It was hard to play against."
With four different players on the scoresheet against Valerenga, Renee was glad to see our attacking foundations bear fruit.
"It's good. It shows how we attack and that we have variety in attack, and different players can score goals. This is obviously something that we've already built with Jonas and this foundation is not so different."
