School children run Emirates Stadium Daily Mile

Arsenal in the Community and The Daily Mile combined their passion for getting young people active by inviting thousands of local school children to run in unison around Emirates Stadium.

Children from 20 local primary schools joined Arsenal fans and special guests Paralympian David Weir and Rudimental musician Leon Rolle, aka DJ Locksmith, for the combined effort.

Gunnersaurus also took part to support Arsenal in the Community’s healthy living initiative and The Daily Mile’s aim to encourage children of all ages to participate in at least 15 minutes of physical activity a day.

The event formed part of Arsenal in the Community’s healthy living offering, which delivers everything from family fitness sessions to diet and nutrition programmes for over-30s.

“It was amazing to welcome 20 local primary schools to Emirates Stadium to complete The Daily Mile together,” explained Arsenal in the Community’s healthy living coordinator, Joe Chaffey.

“We know the power football and the Arsenal name has amongst young people, so it is important that we use this to encourage the benefits of living an active and healthy lifestyle.

“All of the children that took part were a credit to their schools – some even wanted to do more laps! – and it made a huge difference having David and Leon join us to show their support for our work in this area.

“It was also brilliant to work in conjunction with Islington Council to ensure as many local school children as possible could benefit from this initiative.”

Speaking at the event, Arsenal fan and fitness enthusiast Rolle said: “Being involved in an activity like this, in the grounds of the club that I love, was very special for me.

“Seeing so many kids being active and having a lot of fun was incredibly positive and moving. Physical activity and the power it has had on my life, for both my physical and mental health, is second to none.

“Hopefully activities like this can help to inspire young people to find something they love and get them active in order to feel happier and healthier.”
