Interview

Renée on gutting end to League Cup semi-final

After two consecutive League Cup finals, this season's campaign has come to an end after a devastating last-minute loss to Manchester City.

Speaking after the match, head coach Renée Slegers addressed why we were unlucky in round two against City, how the second half had changed the momentum and how we'll bounce back quickly in the FA Cup at the weekend.

Here is everything she had to say:

on why we missed out this time against City...

It's two very good teams playing against each other with an identity of attacking football and front-footed, wanting to go forward. And that's I think what you saw today, so it was good football at times.

I think in the first half, City dominated a little bit better and in the second half, we came out much better so I think that’s more our half. Still, we want to create better end products for our attacks because I think the attacks in the second half are much better.

We beat their press in a much better way. So yeah, gutted because I think the goal is in the last second of the second half and we don't get any time to bounce back, so that's frustrating.

on Daphne's penalty save and positive momentum

Daphne has been brilliant for us and also, the work that's been done in the background, preparing for all scenarios and penalties as well. She's been very important and I felt the same. I felt that we had long spells of momentum in the second half and unfortunately, we didn't capitalise in that moment because I think that's what you need to do when you have momentum.

You need to score those goals and we didn't do that today. It felt like it was going to go to extra time, but then unfortunately the goal was there.

on still looking at the positives...

Yeah, definitely. We're growing and I think they're performing really well. It's just we're playing against top teams at the moment and it's really fine margins and that's what you can see today.

on moving on quickly in the FA Cup fifth round...

Yeah, I think so. I like that as a player to just play the next game again and I think the players do as well. So we recover and we get ready for Sunday.
