Henrikh Mkhitaryan trains for the first time as an Arsenal player

Henrikh Mkhitaryan completed his move to the club on Tuesday - and was straight into action for training at London Colney.

The Armenian playmaker took part in an intense session ahead of our Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Chelsea - although he is cup-tied for the match.

Our club photographer was at London Colney and sent back these pictures.

Once you've looked at then, you can find out how he will fit into the Arsenal team in a Breakdown special below:

Interview

Wenger - Where Mkhitaryan will fit in our team

Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Arsène Wenger

In Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s first Arsenal interview, the playmaker spoke of his versatility. “I don’t stay in one position, I always try to move to create space to [support] my team-mates… I’m everywhere,” he told us.

Arsène Wenger spoke about the Armenia international after his pre-Chelsea press conference on Tuesday, discussing both why he was so keen for Mkhitaryan to join us, and where he sees the 29-year-old fitting in.

“He can play in different positions, but personally I see him first in a wide position, but I’m thinking about him a possibility to play through the middle,” the boss said.

“You are certain in our job of nothing, that’s absolutely sure. But you believe and I believe he has the qualities to do well, is a team player and our game is based on team attitude and movement and I think he can absorb the quantity of movement in our team.”

Mkhitaryan’s arrival adds to a squad already well equipped with attacking midfielders. So can they all fit into the starting XI?

“Certainly all no,” Wenger added. “Some will have to be in and out. But on the other hand, we have seen that Ramsey has been out many times, Wilshere as well, we play in many competitions. You have a number you can fit in.

“Some people need confidence and to feel security, but in football teams, there is a number that pushes you, a number that makes you asleep, and a number that paralyses you.

“So you have to find the right number in each squad to give fair competition, but as well not be too much in administration, and not to have no chance at all, no matter what happens, to play.”

Why Mkhitaryan won’t wear No 7 in Europa League

Henrikh Mkhitaryan has been assigned the No 7 shirt in the Premier League - but he will wear a different number in this season’s Europa League campaign.

The No 7 shirt was vacated by Alexis this month but, because our former forward wore the number during our group-stage win against Cologne back in September, UEFA rules state that Mkhitaryan must wear a different number for the remainder of our Europa League campaign.

This number will be confirmed soon.

Interview

Mkhitaryan - Why I always dreamt of playing here

Henrikh Mkhitaryan became our second signing of the January window when he joined the club from Manchester United.

Click the 'Play' button above to watch his first interview with Arsenal Player and you can read a transcript below:

Henrikh, congratulations, how does it feel to be an Arsenal player?

I’m very happy that we could finish this deal and I’m very happy to be here. It’s a dream come true because I’ve always dreamed of playing for Arsenal. Now that I’m here, I’ll do my best for this club to create history.

I want to take you back to 2009 - in an interview with UEFA you said you wanted to play here at Arsenal. Now you are, but what was it that you admired about the club back then?

I always loved the way that Arsenal played and the way that Arsène Wenger has managed the team. There have been a lot of young players, he’s managed them and they’ve done very well. Of course I was in love with the game of Thierry Henry. I loved the way he played - and maybe that was the reason to support Arsenal.

What was it about Thierry that you particularly liked?

That he was scoring lots of goals, that he was playing for the team. He was like a hero.

For those Arsenal fans that don’t know much about you, what can you tell us about your playing style?

What can I say? It’s better that I don’t say anything and they can see it when I play for Arsenal!

You’re a versatile attacking midfielder - but what’s your favoured position?

All over the pitch! It doesn’t matter exactly where. I don’t stay in one position, I always try to move to create space to [support] my team-mates. I’m everywhere!

In terms of your game, what would you say your particular strengths are?

I don’t know - it’s better that you ask this question to the manager, not to me.

Who are you most looking forward to playing alongside in this team?

With everyone. There is not any exception. I would like to play with everyone, to start training very soon. Let’s hope for it.

Interview

'Mkhitaryan is world class... he's very complete'

Arsene Wenger has long been a fan of Henrikh Mkhitaryan - and he is delighted to have added him to his squad.

The Arsenal manager may have lost Alexis, but he feels our new Armenian playmaker will have a big impact in north London.

"We’re replacing a very good player with a very good player, a world-class player with a world-class player," Wenger told Arsenal Player.

"Mkhitaryan can play on the wing or in midfield, so I believe he can play very well in many positions. That can help us as well because he can play together with Ozil as well as playmaker, so overall it’s a good move.

"He's a very complete player. He creates chances, he defends well, he can absorb distances and he’s very committed as well. I must say he’s a player who has all the attributes. Maybe where he’s a bit short is on goalscoring but he has improved that. If you look at the number of goals he’s scored in his career, it’s quite impressive overall.

"I’m very excited to get a player in who will be committed and focused. It is vital as well to have players who have experience, because we have a very good bunch of young players but we know that it’s not sufficient in the Premier League today to put them all in together. You also need a good weight of experience in your team and he will contribute to that."

The 29-year-old midfielder started his career with Armenian side FC Pyunik, where he won the Armenian Premier League on four occasions. He then moved to Ukraine where he played for Metalurh Donetsk, before joining Shakhtar Donetsk, where he made 72 appearances, winning the Ukrainian Premier League three times. In 2013, Henrikh transferred to Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga, where he made 90 appearances, during which time he was part of the 2014 German Super Cup-winning squad.

On his move, Henrikh said: “I’m very happy that we could finish this deal and I’m very happy to be here. It’s a dream come true because I’ve always dreamed of playing for Arsenal. Now that I’m here, I’ll do my best for this club to create history.”
