Partey and Ghana exit World Cup after Uruguay loss

Thomas Partey in action for Ghana against Uruguay

Thomas Partey saw his World Cup campaign come to an end after Ghana were beaten by Uruguay, who pipped them to a place in the knockout stages.

The midfielder played for the whole contest at the Al Janoub Stadium, with the Black Stars going into the game knowing that a win would see them go through, with even a draw potentially being enough if South Korea failed to beat Portugal.

Things started promisingly for Thomas’ team when they were awarded a penalty in the 21st minute, but Andre Ayew saw his weak attempt saved by Sergio Rochet, and just five minutes later Giorgian de Arrascaeta headed in from close range to instead open the scoring for La Celeste.

And the same man netted a well-taken second on 32 minutes to put his team in firm control of proceedings, who kept Ghana at bay throughout the second half to eliminate the African side from the tournament.

However, elsewhere in Qatar an injury-time goal from Wolves’ Hwang Hee-Chan saw South Korea beat Portugal 2-1, and sneak into second place in the group on goals scored ahead of the Uruguayans.

That brought an end to theirs and Thomas’ participation at the tournament, with our man playing every minute of Ghana’s campaign.

It began with a narrow 3-2 defeat to Portugal, which they followed up by coming out on the right side of the scoreline against South Korea, before suffering defeat in their final group game to ultimately finish bottom on three points.
