Ozil – Why Benfica and Sevilla are such big tests

We may have already played four games this summer but our pre-season campaign is far from over - and the biggest tests are still to come.

This weekend we welcome RB Leipzig, Sevilla and Benfica to north London for the Emirates Cup, and Mesut Ozil says it is “very important” for our first team to face off against Europe’s elite.

“We want to test ourselves against big teams and if we play against strong opponents where we can show what we can do, it does the team good,” he told Arsenal Player.

“They are two technically-gifted teams who will give everything. Our aim has to be to get positive results against them and that’s what we want to do in the Emirates Cup.”

One familiar face could return to Emirates Stadium this weekend. Hale End graduate Chris Willock joined Benfica in June, and could even face his younger brother, Joe, when we meet the Portuguese side on Saturday.

“He trained with us now and then, and was a very good player, very hungry,” Ozil said. “I wish him all the best there.

“For him it’s an opportunity to show his former club what he can do. Like I said, I trained with him a few times and he’s a good footballer.”
