Arsene Wenger believes Rickie Lambert’s rise from League Two to England matchwinner shows the potential of players in lower-league football.
The Southampton striker headed the winner with his first meaningful touch in international football as the Three Lions defeated Scotland 3-2 at Wembley on Wednesday.
Lambert has spent the majority of his career below the top flight and Wenger is surprised that his talent was not identified earlier.
“It is a fairytale story and it raises many questions,” the boss told Arsenal Player.
“How can a player of that calibre, that talent stay for so long in the lower leagues? Immediately you go to the next question: is there somebody else down there who has the same qualities and not be detected? It raises interesting questions.”
