Wenger - I like these kind of goals

You’re probably lying if you weren’t having serious doubts about our chances of picking up three points as Monday’s game entered its final 10 minutes.

Arsene Wenger wasn’t convinced, and understandably so - West Bromwich Albion came to north London with a defensive gameplan and they executed it almost perfectly.

Then Olivier Giroud did what perhaps no one else in our squad can do, combining strength with high-calibre heading ability to snatch all three points.

“It could have been a 0-0 and sometimes you have to accept that,” admitted Wenger when he spoke to Arsenal Player afterwards.

“But I believe we were relentless, we were composed, we didn’t rush our game, we didn’t panic and we didn’t make a mistake at the back.

“For us it was mentally vital to win the game and that’s why I believe it was a big relief. Because you could see that mentally we are not using to losing games. It could have become a block a little bit, so it was good to get that out of the way.

“I like these kind of goals because it’s heading technique,” added Wenger. “It’s not just heading it with strength, it’s just doing the right movement. Olivier did well, congratulations to him.”

You couldn’t fault West Brom for their defensive resilience, even if they could be accused of parking a fleet of buses. Wenger had no complaints about their approach.

“We are favourites, you know as well they have a very well-organised side,” he said. “When you face a team of Tony Pulis, you know you can face this kind of game and I can understand that completely.

“We have to find a way. I believe we moved the ball well, but maybe not with enough incisiveness you know, but they blocked us as well from being incisive with our passing.”
