Arsene Wenger was asked about Santi Cazorla’s future by the media after the news that the Spain midfielder will be out for the next three months.
Cazorla is to undergo surgery on his ankle and is not expected back for some time, and when asked about it on Friday, this is what the boss had to say:
on Santi’s contract…
Six months left. We have an option.
on whether the club will take it up…
We can take this option. I would like to speak about that with Santi Cazorla before I speak with the press. I haven't spoken to him. The decision will be taken in January.
on whether it is down to his fitness…
No, no - my decision only.
on Tomas Rosicky having a similar option before he left the club…
Yes but you cannot... that is true after he got injured but that is the risk when you take an option. But Santi is an exceptional football player and it is just for him to be capable to play.
on what he adds…
The dressing room needs a balance between experience and youth-team players and you need to be guided as well by some experienced players as well when you go through difficult times. They help you always to keep your feet on the ground and keep focused.
