‘Wilshere has a real football brain’

Jack Wilshere

Arsene Wenger has reiterated his belief that Jack Wilshere has a big future at the club - and says he will “spend his life in football”.

The England international has joined Bournemouth on loan for the rest of the season in search of regular playing time, and the Arsenal manager is convinced Jack will be a success on the south coast.

“If he plays, he will play really well because he cannot play badly,” Wenger said. “The first person to be happy about that would be me.

“What you want more than anything is for a player with his talent to play. In a selfish way, you want him to play for your club but there is a bigger perspective, you want him to play and express his talent.

“I try always to combine the interests of the club and the interests of the player. In this case that’s what I tried to do.

“He is not yet completely at his physical level. If you look at the number of games he has played recently in the last six months, you cannot be at the competitive level he wants to be.

“I see him in the future at this club, of course. He will spend his life in football, he is a football man. He has an eye on everybody, it’s in him. You either have that or you haven’t, but he is a real football man.

“He has a real football brain and understands football. It’s in his genes. Certainly one day he will be in my seat.”
