'I'd been waiting to get Paolo back!'

Nigel Winterburn joked that he’d been waiting for 18 years to get revenge on Paolo Di Canio.

The pair were involved in an infamous incident when Di Canio pushed over referee Paul Alcock during Arsenal's clash with Sheffield Wednesday in 1998.

Winterburn and Di Canio recreated the moment in Arsenal Legends’ 4-2 win over Milan Glorie on Saturday, and the former full back revealed revenge had been a long time coming.

“Well, I’ve been waiting a long time to get Paolo back," Winterburn said. "I thought I’m getting a little bit old now so it was a good opportunity. Listen, we had a chat about it before honestly and said ‘let’s just have a little go’.

“He wanted Howard [Webb] to have a join in with us as well, but he wasn’t having any of it! It’s such a fantastic cause today for the charity, and also a competitive game.

“I still play twice a week, but I still say, a lot slower, a lot older, but still competitive!”
