Costa Rica: Campbell eliminated

Joel Campbell's Costa Rica kicked off their Copa America Centenario campaign against Paraguay before they faced United States and Colombia in Group A.

United States 4-0 Costa Rica
Joel Campbell played the first half of Costa Rica’s 4-0 defeat against the USA. Clint Dempsey opened the scoring from the spot, before Jermaine Jones doubled the hosts’ advantage after 37 minutes. Bobby Wood then added a third on the stroke of half-time, before Graham Zusi completed the rout with three minutes to go.

 

Saturday, June 4, Camping World Stadium, Orlando
Costa Rica 0-0 Paraguay
Joel Campbell also started as Costa Rica kicked off their Copa America Centenario campaign against Paraguay on Saturday. Despite Campbell's exciting performance on the right-hand side, La Tricolor were held to a goalless draw in Orlando. The evening ended on a sour note for Costa Rica, though, as Kendall Waston's late red card means he will miss the next Group A game, against the United States on Wednesday.

Sunday, June 12, NRG Stadium, Texas 
Colombia 2-3 Costa Rica 
Joel Campbell came on in the 79th minute of Costa Rica’s 3-2 win against Colombia. Johan Venegas opened the scoring and Frank Fabra equalised four minutes later. Fabra then turned the ball past his own goalkeeper to restore Óscar Ramírez’s side’s lead. Celso Borges added a third for Costa Rica just before the hour mark and, though Marlos Moreno pulled one back for Colombia, they could not find an equaliser. Despite Costa Rica’s victory, they finished third in Group A and were eliminated from the Copa America
