Boss - Why I admired Bergkamp’s goal

Arsene Wenger says that Dennis Bergkamp’s wondergoal against Newcastle United had him on his knees in celebration.

The former Netherlands striker’s finish was voted the Gunners’ greatest goal by fans, after he took two touches to spin away from Nikos Dabizas and slot into the bottom corner.

This week marks the 14th anniversary of that outstanding strike, and Wenger revealed his memories from that famous afternoon in 2002.

"You get down on your knees and say, ‘Thank you very much, I wanted to see that in my life’"

“You admire the skill of course but when the skill is linked with creativity and efficiency, that’s where you get down on your knees and say, ‘Thank you very much, I wanted to see that in my life’,” he told Arsenal Player.

“We forget sometimes how quickly you have to make decisions around the box and how quickly you have to be perfect. When that all comes together you know that you will admire things even more, especially when you know it is something that you are not capable of doing.

“You would give up on it, you would not even try to do it. It’s an element of great technical skill but also of surprise. When the two come together, that’s where the admiration comes."
