Dedicated matchday raises over £220,000

Arsenal Football Club is delighted to confirm its dedicated charity matchday on December 13 against Newcastle United raised in excess of £220,000 for the Arsenal Foundation.

The fantastic total will help the club to continue to support a range of education and sport projects which transform the lives of young people in the UK and overseas. Arsenal in the Community, the club’s global charity partner, Save the Children, and the Willow Foundation will be among the beneficiaries.

The dedicated matchday saw the Arsenal first-team squad and manager donate a day’s wages to the Arsenal Foundation for the eighth consecutive year, with a host of other fundraising initiatives taking place in the build-up to the game.

Theo Walcott and Calum Chambers joined volunteers from Save the Children and the Willow Foundation to bucket collect at Emirates Stadium before the match. The England duo raised nearly £2,000 thanks to the generosity of supporters on the day.

Fans also got involved by wearing their Christmas jumpers to the game, taking selfies, and donating to the Arsenal Foundation. Supporters from around the world submitted their pictures, with the best selfies displayed on the big screens at Emirates Stadium. The winning picture won a match ball signed by Alexis Sanchez.

A donation from the club’s sales of Christmas jumpers was made to Save the Children to support its annual Christmas Jumper Day initiative and 50p from every matchday programme sold was donated to the club’s foundation. A special matchday raffle gave supporters a further chance to donate.

Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis said: “This was the eighth season that we’ve dedicated a Premier League match at Emirates Stadium to charity. We’re always amazed by the generosity shown by everyone associated with the club.

“The amount raised will help continue a long tradition of giving and support for young people here in Islington and around the world. We thank everyone for their support for this annual fundraiser.”

Supporters can still make a donation to the Arsenal Foundation by visiting www.justgiving.com/thearsenalfoundation or by texting AFCF12 plus the amount (e.g. £2) to 70070.
