‘We have some outstanding youngsters’

Wojceich Szczesny believes the future is bright for the Club, with a host of “outstanding” youngsters ready to make their breakthrough.

Teenage striker Chuba Akpom scored four goals in four games on the Asia tour, while Gedion Zelalem and Serge Gnabry also caught the eye.

Szczesny fully expected that trio to shine in the Far East, having been impressed by their mature performances in training.

“I was happy to see the young players who travelled to Asia do well,” he told Arsenal Player. “Gedion, Serge and Chuba were all outstanding and hopefully they will be very important for the Club in the future.

“I wouldn't say [their performances] surprised me because they have trained with us for a while and we know their qualities.

“We expected them to [make an impression]. It is good for them to show the fans that there are young players coming through.”

That trio could be involved against Aston Villa on Saturday and Szcznesy says the squad cannot wait to get the new season underway.

“We are looking forward to it, we've had a very long and tough pre-season with the first game always in the back of our heads,” he said. “We’re excited and we hope we are going to challenge for the title this season.”
