Montemurro on Williamson’s new role

Williamson

Leah Williamson delivered another midfield masterclass on Sunday as we cruised to a 4-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion.

The England international starred at the heart of our defence during our title-winning 2018/19 season - but she’s since been pushed forward into midfield, tasked with shielding our backline and kickstarting attacks.

So why has she excelled in her new role?

"Leah’s a very proactive footballer,” said Joe Montemurro. “She likes to turn forward, face forward and find the passes in between lines and she’s very good at that.

“She does it so well as a centre-back and we felt, by doing it as a central-midfielder in the way we want to play, if she gets her positioning right she can find passes anywhere and she was very very good.

“She’s got a little bit of a knock so we’re just sort of monitoring her from the game the other night so we decided to take her off and not risk anything."
