Montemurro - Why we’re becoming harder to mark

Montemurro

We recorded our biggest league win of the season in our 4-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion to leapfrog Manchester City to the top of the Women’s Super League.

Jordan Nobbs was one of four different names on the scoresheet as Kim Little, Vivianne Miedema and Danielle van de Donk all benefitted from Montemurro’s system.

We spoke to our head coach after the victory and this is what he said.

on the performance…

It was good, it was very well controlled and I though that we would maybe have a bit of a lull from Thursday as the break has been short but I felt that we were a lot more clinical today and a lot more cleaner today than on Thursday night and it was good to watch some good football.

on our combination play…

We’ve worked a lot on set-pieces and the organisation of set pieces and exploiting the opposition’s weaknesses so that was good. I thought the first goal was even better than the second. It started from one side and we’ve made it to the other side while combining and dragging them out, Kim’s played a little one-two and got in so there was a few of those combinations so they’re hard teams to unlock especially when they’re so deep and you can’t drag them out and it was good.

on the season so far…

It’s been very positive, it’s been,I think we’ve worked towards this platform of control, this platform of making sure we’re stable and we’ve got that and I think we can be a little bit more ruthless and aggressive in front of goal and going forward and hopefully we’ll take the next stage a little bit better.

on four different goal scorers…

I asked who scored the goals and it was four different scorers and it was excellent because they were all in different pockets where they’re rotating out and in and out, and it’s the only way you’re going to dislodge these teams, it’s very hard to mark. They’re getting used to it, they’re understanding it and with Jordan now it’s a little bit of a more exciting stage because now we’ve got the more forward runs going and we can break lines other ways, instead of just underneath we can break lines beyond too.
