Montemurro - Why our pre-Christmas form is vital

Joe Montemurro

Despite a perfect start to the Women’s Super League season, Joe Montemurro’s feet remain firmly placed on the ground.

We’ve won each of our opening five games and scored 27 goals along the way, but with fixtures coming thick and fast after the Christmas break, we can’t afford to rest on our laurels.

“We’ve got a lot of games coming forward with the FA Cup kicking in after Christmas, so we need to make sure that we get all the points we can this side of Christmas,” Montemurro told Arsenal.com.

“We want to take the pressure off for the next half of the season with regards to the amount of games we’re playing, so we have to make sure we’re ready for every game. This weekend we have Bristol - and they’re another team that are gaining points and are in a good position, so we have to make sure that we’re ready for it.”

Our forwards have been in fine goalscoring form as of late, but at the other end of the pitch our defenders have been just as efficient, keeping an impressive four clean sheets in five WSL games.

“It’s all good to attack and go forward in numbers, but you also have to manage the game when the ball breaks down and we’re very good at that,” Montemurro added.

“We work a lot on managing the team when we are attacking to make sure that if there’s a counter attack on then we’re prepared for it, so defending is attacking and attacking is defending. You have to be smart in identifying that and having good shape.”
