Interview

Montemurro on Slavia, intensity, Veje and Maier

Montemurro

We booked our place in the Women’s Champions League quarter-finals with a 13-2 aggregate win over Slavia Prague on Thursday evening.

Vivianne Miedema and Danielle van de Donk both hit hat-tricks while Kim Little and Jill Roord completed the rout.

We spoke to Joe Montemurro after the match and this is what he said:

on the performance…

It was a good performance, I think our ability to play a little bit of a different midfield today, in terms of rotation and not playing with a solid number 6 was great because they rotated very well. We were able to find spaces and it was a comprehensive victory, it just shows the strength of the squad

on his side’s intensity…

I expected them to maintain their intensity because when we can control the load of the players, we can control who’s playing it makes it a lot easier to make sure that we give players full games. We came out of the Chelsea game following an international break where a lot of the squad had played some excessive loads so we expected the players to drop off in the first-leg. However, we need to be cleaner and tighter in those things and make sure the lessons are learnt so it doesn’t happen again.

on Katrine Veje and Leonie Maier…

It’s great to have them back, they’re up and running again and we’re hoping to give them more minutes but they’re the aggressive fullbacks but they also understand their defensive duties which is very important.
