Our young side had been earning plenty of plaudits over the past few months after stringing together an unbeaten ten-game run, but they had something of an awakening at Anfield on Saturday, going down 4-0 to a rampant Liverpool side.

For the likes of Takehiro Tomiyasu and Aaron Ramsdale, this was a first ever defeat in Arsenal colours, and afterwards Mikel Arteta said his players need to use the disappointment in the right way, and channel their energy for the forthcoming busy period.

“I don’t like learning like that, but there’s a lot of learning that we can take from the game for sure,” the boss said afterwards. “One of the biggest learnings after a disappointing result is focus tomorrow on the next one. Don’t get carried away with what happened in the past because we have to look to the future.

“We’ll look at what we should have done better and why we got punished the way we did and after that put our energy and focus on the next game.”

After three successive clean sheets, Arteta was also frustrated with the manner of the goals we conceded at Anfield – the first from a set piece and the second from a defensive mistake.

He said: “It is one of the toughest places to play football in Europe and in the moment something goes a little bit wrong or the timing is not right, you get punished and they deserved to win the game.”
