Euro 2020: Xhaka suffers defeat to Italy

Granit Xhaka was our first Gunner to play his second group-stage game at Euro 2020, for Switzerland against Italy.

Our 28-year-old retained his place in midfield alongside Remo Freuler but despite making more tackles than anyone else on the pitch, was unable to help his country avoid defeat to the Group A leaders.

Manuel Locatelli struck either side of half-time to give the hosts a commanding lead in Rome, before Ciro Immobile secured back-to-back wins for Roberto Mancini's side with an 89th-minute goal.

Xhaka - who also had the most touches and completed the most passes in the Italian capital - is now in need of a win in his final group-stage game, against bottom-placed Turkey on Sunday, June 20. Switzerland also need Wales to drop points against Italy to stand a chance of reaching the knock-out stage.

The next Arsenal involvement at Euro 2020 comes in Group D, with Bukayo Saka's England hosting Kieran Tierney's Scotland at Wembley. Saka was an unused substitute in the Three Lions' win over Croatia, while Tierney missed Scotland's opening-day defeat to Czech Republic, but Steve Clarke is expecting our No 3 to return in time for Friday's 8pm kick-off in north-west London.
