Arsenal under-21s head coach Mehmet Ali shared his thoughts following our Under-21s' 2-1 defeat to Chelsea on Friday night.
Despite taking an early lead through Nathan Butler-Oyedeji, goals from Donell McNeilly and Brodi Hughes turned the match in Chelsea's favour.
"I thought it was a really good game of football. Both teams went toe-to-toe, and we saw some excellent performances from a few of our lads, as well as from many of Chelsea's players. We had some big chances in the first half that we didn’t capitalise on.
"They’re a challenging side to play against because they’re so expansive and use their goalkeeper very effectively.
"Credit to Chelsea – their first goal was very well worked. We were compact, but it was an impressive bit of individual brilliance that created the opportunity for them to score. In the second half, they grew into the game and ultimately deserved the win.
"When we went 2-1 down, we really went for it. Full credit to our players; whatever tactical changes we threw at them, they adjusted well. We could have snatched a late equaliser, but as I said, credit to Chelsea."
Mehmet also shared his delight at seeing academy players Tommy Setford and Ayden Heaven make their first-team debuts in the 3-0 victory over Preston North End in the League Cup.
"I’m incredibly proud of them. It’s a testament to our coaches, and it’s fantastic to see Ayden, Tommy, and Ethan performing so well. But as Mikel always says, it’s all about consistency. I’m pleased Ayden could play tonight to maintain his consistent performances. He was outstanding today."
