Interview

Mead - Everyone’s calling my goal a ‘crot’ now!

Beth Mead

It seems that Beth Mead has created her very own signature finish.

The 23-year-old found the top corner with a stunning strike against Brazil last month - and she did it again on Sunday, firing past Anke Preuss from a seemingly impossible angle.

We spoke to Mead about her goalscoring performance - and this is what she said:

on the overall performance…

I think if we’re being critical of ourselves then we started the first 15 minutes a bit sloppy as we had to get used to the pitch. We’re quite lucky to be playing on a pitch that’s like a carpet at home and we’re a team that likes to play football, so that every touch and extra pass we needed sometimes. We just needed to get used to that and then we were able to play some good football and that’s when the goals started to come.

on scoring five goals in her last six games for club and country…

Yeah, I’m starting to finding those positions again. I had a little spell where I wasn’t happy with myself, but I’m really enjoying my football again and I feel far more confident on the ball. I think I’ve just been putting the work in during training and I also went away with England and had a good time, so that was great for confidence and since then I’ve been trying to maintain that for Arsenal.

on whether she meant her chipped goal…

No, I was lucky with that one! It was meant to be more of a cross. It hit a bobble and it just happened to go top bins. I’m not going to complain, though, and everyone’s calling it a ‘crot’ at the moment, which I’ll take! I meant my goal for England but I can’t take today’s.

on building momentum at the right time…

It’s been great to get the girls back on the pitch and that’s really helped us a team too. We were loving our football at the start of the season, we were the team to watch, and now I think we’re getting back to that. If we’re looking back then I’ll say that we want to do it consistently throughout the season, but hopefully we can continue playing like this now and carry it through to the end of the season.
