Matt Smith joins Doncaster Rovers on loan

Matt Smith

Matt Smith has joined League One side Doncaster Rovers on loan for the 2021/22 season.

The 20-year-old midfielder enjoyed two loan spells in League One last season. Firstly with Swindon Town until January, before joining up with Charlton Athletic to continue his development for the remainder of the campaign.

Matt has been at the club since under-9 level and has progressed strongly through the age groups. During his time with us, Matt captained the under-18s to success in the Premier League South in 2018/19, before making the transition to the under-23s, becoming a key member of the squad in recent seasons.

Prior to his loan spells, Matt also frequently trained with the first-team squad, with his development being rewarded by selection into the first-team matchday squad on six occasions after the season’s restart last year. Notably, Matt was in the matchday squad, as an unused substitute in the FA Cup final victory over Chelsea in August 2020.

We wish Matt the best of luck with Doncaster Rovers next season.

The loan is subject to the completion of regulatory processes.
