Ainsley Maitland-Niles made his debut for West Bromwich Albion and played the full game but could not prevent the Baggies losing to two second-half goals from Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.
Over in France, William Saliba was in fine form for Nice as he helped them to a clean sheet and victory against Angers - and came close to scoring with a header that hit the crossbar.
Sead Kolasinac played the full 90 minutes but couldn’t prevent Schalke losing 3-0 at home to RB Leipzig in a game that saw former Gunner Shkodran Mustafi make his debut for the hosts.
Matteo Guendouzi came off the bench in the 56th minute but was unable to help Hertha Berlin turn around their match against Bayern Munich, with the European champions winning thanks to Kingsley Coman’s first-half strike.
Dinos Mavropanos played the full 90 minutes for Stuttgart in their Bundesliga clash against Bayer Levekusen, but they were well-beaten 5-2 on the road.
Zech Medley made his debut for Kilmarnock and played the entirety of their game at St Mirren, with the hosts claiming a 2-0 win after goals from Kyle McAllister and Jonathan Obika.
Mark McGuinness played the full 90 minutes and kept a clean sheet as Ipswich beat Blackpool 2-0 at Portman Road thanks to goals from Alan Judge and Luke Woolfenden.
