Loan round-up: Balogun takes tally to six

Folarin Balogun celebrates scoring for Reims

Folarin Balogun continued his hot streak as he bagged his sixth goal in nine Ligue 1 games during Reims’ 2-2 draw at Troyes on Sunday.

Having scored for England under-21s earlier in the week, our striker took 12 minutes of the encounter in north-east France to find the net again when he converted a low cross to open the scoring.

A last-minute effort from Jackson Porozo denied Reims the win though, leaving them in 17th position in the table, however only PSG pair Neymar and Kylian Mbappe have scored more times in the league than Balogun so far this season, who was withdrawn in the 65th minute.

Elsewhere in the division, Mbappe hit the winner as Nicolas Pepe’s Nice were beaten 2-1 by the capital club, with the Ivorian replacing former Gunner Aaron Ramsey on 62 minutes. Nuno Tavares was suspended for Marseille’s 3-0 win against Angers after picking up three bookings.

In Italy, Pablo Mari helped Monza follow up their 1-0 win against Juventus a fortnight ago with a 3-0 away success at Sampdoria to lift them out of the relegation zone, while both Mika Biereth and Omar Rekik made their first appearances in nearly two months as late replacements during Waalwijk’s 2-2 draw against Sparta Rotterdam, with our duo introduced to the action within a minute of each other.

Also on the continent, Miguel Azeez played the final 32 minutes of Ibiza’s 3-2 win over Lugo to leapfrog Real Oviedo in the Spanish Segunda, for whom Marcelo Flores was withdrawn at half-time of their 3-1 home defeat by Cartagena. Meanwhile, Alex Runarsson saw his Alanyaspor side draw 1-1 with Giresunspor in Turkey.

On these shores, Ainsley Maitland-Niles started his second game for Southampton as they saw a one-goal lead slip to be beaten Everton at St Mary’s, with the midfielder playing 67 minutes of the contest.

Harry Clarke made his comeback from injury after eight weeks out, playing the final 13 minutes of Stoke City’s 4-0 home loss to Watford, while Charlie Patino featured for the entirety of Blackpool’s 1-0 defeat by second-placed Norwich City.

Also in the Championship, there was better news for Auston Trusty who helped Birmingham City claim a point from a trip to Sheffield United courtesy of a 1-1 draw, but Brook Norton-Cuffy was on the receiving end of a 2-0 defeat to Wigan Athletic as Rotherham United look for a new manager following Paul Warne’s departure to Derby County.

Further down the pyramid, Tyreece John-Jules helped Ipswich Town to a 3-2 win against Portsmouth that keeps them within Plymouth Argyle at the summit of League One, while Arthur Okonkwo kept his fifth clean sheet in 12 outings for Crewe Alexandra as they were held to a goalless draw by Carlisle, leaving them 12th in the League One table.

Fellow shot-stopper Tom Smith made his second Bromley appearance as they drew 2-2 at Solihull Moors in the National League, who netted twice in the final minute to deny Smith a victory, and Tim Akinola played the final18 minutes of Chesterfield’s 2-1 loss to Maidenhead.
