England equalled their best-ever finish at the Under 17s Women’s World Cup, coming fourth overall in the Dominican Republic.
The young Lionesses, captained by our very own Laila Harbert, were knocked out by U17 European Championship winners, Spain, after an impressive run in the tournament.
On Sunday’s third-place play-off, England faced the USA with four young Gunners in the starting XI: Laila Harbert, Hope McSheffrey, Tara Junaid and Cecily Wellesley-Smith. Sophie Harwood and Izzy Fisher were both introduced from the bench in the second half but the Lionesses ultimately fell to a 3-0 defeat.
The last time England went this far in the U17 World Cup was 2008, with a side that included former Gunners Jordan Nobbs, Danielle Carter and Jemma Rose.
