Interview

‘It’s a dream come true, to be honest’

Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Wolfsburg will live long in the memory of childhood Gooner, Lotte Wubben-Moy.

Trailing by one goal to nil with less than a minute remaining, Tobin Heath expertly disguised her free-kick to pick out Wubben-Moy inside the area, and our defender fired into the roof of the net and sent the Emirates crowd into jubilation.

We spoke to Wubben-Moy after this thrilling first-leg encounter - and this is what she had to say:

on her feelings at the final whistle…

You can tell by the smile on my face I’m pretty happy to have scored. We had a controlled game, we absorbed their pressure pretty well, we were patient on the ball, we counter-attacked them well and we used our speed and they seemed to be scared of that which was good to see. I didn’t think the goal would come from me, but it always felt like a goal was coming and we go on to next week feeling lively and we can learn from our lessons and push for the win.

on where that strike came from…

Blimey, I don’t think I could have hit it harder, could I?! But a goal is a goal to me. I’m a defender so it’s not my trade to be scoring goals, but in any way I can help the team I’m happy to have scored today.

on whether Vivianne Miedema has been teaching her to shoot…

Yeah, she’s been teaching me a lot! It’s not just the Dutch that she’s been speaking to me, she’s been speaking to me in footie language as well. I learn from Viv week in week out, she’s a class player and I think you saw some of the best from her today getting on the ball in the pockets in the No 10. I did think a goal was going to come and I’m excited about what we can do together next week.

on whether we could have scored more…

To be extra critical of ourselves we could have been more clinical. We had a lot of chances but these are things we can learn from. It’s good to know when the goals haven’t dried up, they’ll be coming up next week and we’re just saving them for the away leg.

on what Jonas Eidevall told her to expect from Wolfsburg…

We knew that they would be creative. We obviously played with Jill Roord last year and we know what we’re coming up against with her. To be honest, he sort of left it to us. We’ve got a good partnership and we play well together, and we know what each other’s movements are going to be like. We are obviously disappointed to let the first goal in but we know we’ll be pushing for the win next week and however we can help the team - if it’s a clean sheet and we kept them out beyond the one goal tonight – then we will do everything we can.

on our spacing improving in the second half…

We said at half-time the line was dropping, creating big gaps in the midfield. That meant when we got there for the first contact we couldn’t get there for the second contact. Coming out for the second half we said we’d push the line up more and it obviously showed. We were more compact and more disciplined and as result we could absorb the attacks more efficiently.

on what games like this will do for her development…

It’s massive. Jonas puts a lot of confidence in me and I think I’m developing pretty well under him, you can be the judge of that! It’s a dream come true to be honest. A Champions League quarter-final, listening to that music, coming out and even getting a goal… what more could you ask for?

on the North London derby…

It’s massive. I’m going to be calling out people from north, east, south London to get on the tube and get down to the Emirates and hopefully we’ll be shouting loud for the red and white.
