'It was key to bring back the Arsenal DNA'

Montemurro

Joe Montemurro may have lifted the Continental Tyres Cup last term, but says his biggest priority in his first season in charge was restoring the Arsenal DNA.

The former Melbourne City coach has encouraged a free-flowing brand of football that’s seen him lose just three games since joining the club lastNovember  - and now he wants to take us to the very top of European football.

“Last season was a massive learning curve for me, both culturally and having to combat different styles, different systems and different ways of playing week-in, week-out,” Montemurro told Arsenal.com.

“I had to adapt a little bit more and change certain things, but the most important thing for me was to bring back the Arsenal DNA, the Arsenal way of playing, and an identity and integrity that represents this great badge.

“That was the most important thing for me last year, to bring that back and bring that belief back into these players, and also to put a process in place for us to grow over the next two to three years to be the best club in Europe.

“We need to win those three games that we lost last year! It’s going to be so tight again as there are a lot of good teams in this league, and with this now being the first year of its real true professionalism, it’s a cup final in every game and we need to make sure that we’re always there in touching distance. Hopefully our quality and our work will shine in the end.”
