Saka shines as England begin Euro 2024 with win

Saka v Serbia

Bukayo Saka was one of England’s standout performers in their 1-0 win over Serbia in Euro 2024 on Sunday.

Bukayo frequently beat his man on the right wing, and it was through that method that the Three Lions scored their only goal of the game. He crossed from the byline on his right foot, and Jude Bellingham arrived to head the ball into the back of the net in the 13th minute. That was Bukayo's 27th goal contribution in 24 starts for his country.

Kyle Walker was almost the next beneficiary of Saka’s work on the right when he broke through on the counter-attack, but the full-back put his shot wide.

In the 76th minute, Gareth Southgate replaced Bukayo with Jarrod Bowen and England held on to their lead for a positive start to the group stage. They’re top of Group C ahead of games against Denmark and Slovenia, with the Danes next up on Thursday.

Declan Rice was also heavily involved in the match, keeping things ticking over in midfield and playing the full 90 minutes. In that time he won back possession 10 times for his side, becoming the first player in the competition to hit those heights. Meanwhile, Aaron Ramsdale was an unused sub.

Jakob Kiwior was also in Euro 2024 action on Sunday, playing 90 minutes of Poland’s 2-1 defeat to the Netherlands, and impressed in a central defensive role, winning seven duels, and making two blocks, and recovering the ball three times.

Adam Bursa gave the Poles a surprise lead in the 16th minute, but Cody Gakpo reduced the arrears moments later. Jakub came close to scoring himself after receiving the ball in a promising position but Bart Verbruggen was equal to it, and that save would prove crucial.

Wout Weghorst fired in a late winner for the Netherlands, who are top of Group D. Poland will look to bounce back with a fixture against Austria on Friday, as Jakub looks to win his 25th cap for his country, having not missed a game since his debut.
