Two of our first-team players were in international action on Sunday evening.
Shkodran Mustafi’s Germany faced Azerbaijan while Mohamed Elneny’s Egypt took on Congo, with a win securing a place at next summer’s World Cup.
Scroll down to find out how they got on:
Mohamed Elneny
Sunday, October 8
Egypt 2-1 Congo
Mohamed Elneny played the full 90 minutes of Egypt’s World Cup qualifying win over Congo. After a goalless first half, Mohamed Salah gave the hosts the lead on the hour mark, only for his side to be pegged by Arnold Bouka Moutou’s 87th-minute strike.
With the sides looking like they would share the points, Egypt won a penalty and Salah slotted home from the spot to send his country to the World Cup for the first time since 1990.
Shkodran Mustafi
Sunday, October 8
Germany 5-1 Azerbaijan
Shkodran Mustafi started Germany’s World Cup qualifying win over Azerbaijan but was substituted after just 36 minutes through injury. The scores were locked at 1-1 at the time, with Ramil Seydayev cancelling out Leon Goretzka’s opener before Mustafi was helped off the pitch.
Germany seized control of the game after the break, with Sandro Wagner, Antonio Rudiger, Goretzka and Emre Can all scoring to maintain their 100 per cent record in World Cup qualifying.
