Interview

‘I couldn’t find my mask to celebrate!’

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Just a week after seeing his late penalty saved in the north London derby, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang showed nerves of steel to stroke his spot kick past David de Gea and seal a huge three points against Manchester United.

The forward revealed after the game that strike partner Alexandre Lacazette gave him confidence by trusting him with the kick – the only thing that went wrong was his celebration!

Here’s what Auba said after netting his 20th goal of the season…

on sealing all three points…

It was a big result. We worked hard today and we knew that it was going to be a tough game. We did well and won the game.

on whether he felt pressure when he took his penalty…

No, I felt comfortable because all my teammates gave me a lot of confidence. Laca let me shoot again and that’s really nice. That’s the spirit of the team so I felt well when I took my shot. I was waiting for the goalkeeper so that I could shoot the same as usual and last time against Tottenham I had my head down and didn’t watch the goalkeeper. That was my mistake but today I watched him, waited and scored.

on the feeling after scoring…

When you miss a penalty it’s never easy to come back and shoot again, but it was okay.

on scoring his 20th goal of the season…

I’m really happy that I’m scoring goals and we’re winning games because that’s most important. I wanted to celebrate with my mask but I couldn’t find it, so next time!

on Bernd Leno’s fine form…

I think he had a really, really good game against Tottenham and today again as well he did the same. He’s doing very well and we know that Leno is a great goalkeeper. That’s important for us to have a clean sheet today.

on whether finishing in the top four is in our hands…

Of course it’s in our hands, but we know that games are not easy. No matter who you play it’s always difficult in the Premier League, but everything is in our hands and we will try our best to stay in the top four and go to the Champions League.

on the spirit that the team have shown over their last two outings…

We know that in these types of games we need a good spirit and we did very well and that’s what I’m saying. I think we are living well in the dressing room so it’s really good.
