Hector Bellerin joins Barcelona

Hector Bellerin

Hector Bellerin has joined Barcelona in a permanent transfer after eleven years with us.

Hector joined us in July 2011 and made 239 first team appearances, winning the FA Cup three times and FA Community Shield twice. He has also represented his country at all levels from under-16s to the senior squad, being a member of Spain’s Euro 2016 squad.

The 27-year-old defender was born in Barcelona and spent the early stages of his youth career at the Barca Academy, before joining us at the age of 16 and subsequently signing his first professional contract upon turning 17 years old in 2012.

He made his first team debut in the League Cup in September 2013, before spending a loan spell in the Championship with Watford that season to gain some valuable first team experience.

Hector soon developed into a dynamic full-back and enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2013/14, capping the campaign by being in the starting line-up for the FA Cup Final victory over Aston Villa. He was named in the Premier League Team of the Season for 2015/16.

Last season, Hector enjoyed a successful loan spell with Real Betis, being a regular in the side and winning the Copa Del Rey.

Mikel Arteta had this to say about Hector: “We today say goodbye to Hector and we thank him so much for his loyalty and commitment to Arsenal Football Club. During his 11 years with Arsenal, Hector won three FA Cups and made nearly 250 appearances – such a huge contribution to the club. I’m privileged to have played in the same squad as Hector for three seasons, wearing the Arsenal shirt and sharing many great moments on and off the football pitch together. We thank you Hector and wish you and your family all the best for your return to Barcelona.”

Everyone at Arsenal thanks Hector for his contribution during his 11 years with us and wish him and his family the best of health and happiness in his new chapter.

The deal is subject to the completion of regulatory processes.
