Kai Havertz got his third consecutive start for Germany at Euro 2024 and his 49th cap for the country in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Switzerland.
Germany thought they’d taken the lead in the 17th minute when Robert Andrich hit a swerving shot over the hands of Yann Sommer, but VAR intervened due to a foul by Jamal Musiala.
Moments later, Switzerland went ahead as Dan Ndoye lifted the ball high into the roof of the net from Remo Freuler’s cross.
Ruben Vargas had the ball in the back of the net again late on for Switzerland, but the flag was raised for offside before Havertz hit the crossbar at the other end.
Then, in the second minute of added time, Germany’s persistence paid off, substitute Niclas Fullkrug heading back across goal from David Raum’s cross for 1-1.
The result meant that Germany finished top of Group A while Switzerland came second. Scotland were knocked out following their late 1-0 defeat to Hungary, who can still reach the knockout stages as one of the four best third-placed teams.
Germany’s round of 16 tie will take place at 8pm BST on Saturday, June 29 against the runners-up of Group C, which could be England, Denmark, Slovenia or Serbia.
