Harbert on captaining England at U17s World Cup

Our very own Laila Harbert will captain the young Lionesses at this year's U17 FIFA Women's World Cup.

Their campaign kicks off at midnight on October 18 in the Dominican Republic but before then, we caught up with the young England captain.

"Captaining my country is the greatest honour," said Laila. "It comes with a lot of responsibility but I think as a team, we're so united that it's not just about being one individual. The whole team contributes in their own way, and we use each other's strengths to our advantage."

Our midfielder also wore the armband for England at this summer's U17 European Championships, where the side reached the final for the very first time in their history.

"We had a great Euros campaign that proved that we're one of the best teams in Europe. Now we're looking to extend that to becoming one of the best in the world.

We’re fuelled by coming so close during the Euros. Yes, we had a good tournament, but obviously, history doesn't count on the pitch. We're looking to prove that all over again. I think the Euros was a bit more than just a medal for us. We grew throughout the season as a group and we're in a really great place going into the World Cup.

"The World Cup means potentially a month away from home. We’re going to find ways to adapt to a different time zone and different weather. It's 32 degrees out there right now! But we've got great plans in place and I’ve spoken to the medical team to prepare as best as possible for that.

"Of course, I was just recently in the U.S. for Arsenal's pre-season tour so I think England were quite pleased that I'd had that experience!"

Laila is one of eight young Gunners representing England at the tournament, but our senior squad also has plenty of memories from the tournament.

"I want to come back to Arsenal and share my experience. I spoke to Leah, Lotte and Less about their experience at the U17 World Cup which was the last time England made the tournament in 2016.

"They said that at any age group, playing in a major tournament is so special so just enjoy every moment. You don't get the time back. Especially at my age, there's no greater competition than the World Cup, so I’m just going to be present and make some memories."
