Euro 2022: Williamson’s England reach semi-final

Leah Williamson

Congratulations to our Lionesses, who booked their place in the semi-finals of Euro 2022 on Wednesday night with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Spain.

For the fourth consecutive game, captain Leah Williamson and Beth Mead were handed starts, while Nikita Parris was introduced late on to get the result over the line.

With almost 30,000 in attendance, Amex Stadium was rocking from the first whistle and after sustaining some pressure from Spain, Ellen White fired home inside the area from a set-piece, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.

Spain then went on to take the lead shortly after the restart through Esther Gonzalez, who coolly converted inside the area to finish off a sweeping attacking move, but Sarina Wiegman responded well with three substitutes in the space of five minutes to change the game’s momentum.

England kept pushing, pressing and fighting for one last golden opportunity, and with just over five minutes of normal time remaining, that moment finally arrived. With a stunning delivery from Lauren Hemp, Alessia Russo climbed high inside the penalty area to knock the ball down to Ella Toone, and the young forward made no mistake in firing past Sandra Panos.

It was just what England needed, and as extra time began, Wiegman’s side were on top and hungry for more, searching for that all-important winner that eventually arrived with a moment of magic from Georgia Stanway.

Driving through the midfield, Stanway had the Spain defence backpedaling, before taking aim from the edge of the area and arrowing the ball into the top left corner. It was a goal worthy of winning any knockout fixture, and it was no less than England deserved for their character and spirit on the night.

Our four Lionesses will now go on to face either Sweden or Belgium in the semi-finals on Tuesday, July 26.
