Euro 2020: Xhaka starts with draw against Wales

Granit Xhaka was our first player in Euro 2020 action, when he captained Switzerland to a draw against Wales in their Group A opener.

Our No 34 led his country out in Baku, starting in midfield alongside Remo Freuler behind an attacking trio of Xherdan Shaqiri, Haris Seferovic and Breel Embolo.

It was the latter who gave the Swiss the lead just four minutes after half-time, heading home from Xherdan Shaqiri's corner but Wales - who boasted former Gunner Aaron Ramsey in midfield - hit back with a header of their own, from Kieffer Moore.

There was still time for some late drama, though, when substitute Mario Gavranovic had his late goal ruled out for offside by VAR, as Switzerland were made to settle for a point in their first outing of the tournament.

The result means Switzerland sit third in Group A, after Italy beat Turkey 3-0 in the group's other game. Xhaka will be hoping to lead his nation out against the Italians in Switzerland's next game, at 8pm (UK) on Wednesday.

Our next Gunner in action at Euro 2020 could be Bukayo Saka. England take on Croatia at Wembley in their first Group D game on Sunday. The match kicks off at 2pm (UK) in the capital.
