Press conference

Emery on Torreira, Europa League and… fruit juice

Unai Emery tends to be asked about a range of subjects at his press briefings - and today he was asked about... fruit juice.

Our head coach was responding to questions about whether he had banned it from the training ground, and this is what he told the press:

on whether it is true that he has banned fruit juice with high sugar levels…

Yes, this is true. I only changed, I like fruit a lot and I like fruit juice. But with a lot of sugar? Not very well. It’s for that and when I was very young, my father was coming every day with one fresh orange fruit juice. I like in my life, more of that. It’s for that, when I arrived here, I asked only for that from the cook. And the players, I think, are the same. They prefer their orange juice fresh.

on whether Lucas Torreira is close to starting…

I am very happy with the player and I think every player can play. They also are working very well every day and demanding me with their works, to start the games. I like this spirit and also the possibility to play for the first 11 is okay. Then there is a possibility to stay in the match and then play. Every player, I am really, really very happy with how they are working and not only with Lucas, but for all.

on Europa League being a priority or not…

The experience has given me different situations and different moments. I’ve learned from every moment in my career, the same in Spain at Almeria, at Valencia, at Sevilla, at Spartak Moscow, at PSG. Now I want to continue working to improve in my career. Each match, I think for 90 minutes against the opposition, and prepare the match in the best possible way with my players and also with respect for the opposition and play with our personality and our idea. We need to have this idea on the pitch for the 90 minutes in every match. With that, Sunday is a very important match for us, a very important three points, and difficult because they play in this stadium with their supporters pushing a lot and they are also a very big side to play against us.
