Jonas Eidevall has reflected on the WSL season and given his thoughts on what the league could look like next year.
Our manager spoke to the media ahead of Saturday’s final league match against Aston Villa who have enjoyed an impressive season with a fifth-place finish.
Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City have traditionally made up the league’s “big three”, with Manchester United’s emergence at the summit stretching the group to the “big four” in recent years.
When asked if Aston Villa could be considered part of a “big five” next campaign, Jonas insisted there is no guarantee any of the teams that finished in the top four this season will be there again this time next year.
“I don’t really agree with saying the ‘big three’, ‘big four’, or ‘big five,” he said. “I don’t really see it like that, we’re in a league where everyone is trying to grow and be better. These things are going to happen fast.
“It’s not going to be about protecting a position you hold now, it’s about looking forward and seeing where we need to be in two years, in three years, in five years' time. We need to work so hard, efficient and smart in order to get there, and the clubs that will do that best are the ones that are going to be on top.
“There’s no guarantee at all that any of the top four clubs will be there again if we’re not doing things right.”
He added that he believes the women’s game and the future of the sport are heading in the right direction.
“I think it’s a very exciting time for women’s football, there have been a lot of investments that have been done and are to come, and the competition will be very high too, it’s about really embracing that and doing our very best with it and the future will be bright.”
