Eddie Nketiah wins the Toulon Tournament

Toulon Tournament 2017

Congratulations to Eddie Nketiah, who won the Toulon Tournament with England Under-21s on Saturday evening.

Our teenage striker claimed two goals and set up two more in his four appearances, including scoring the competition’s Best Goal against Scotland and an assist in the final.

This time starting in an exciting front three alongside Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham and Kieran Dowell, Nketiah was at his direct best in Saturday’s decider against Mexico.

A slow start resulted in England going behind within just two minutes when Roberto Alvarado slotted home from close range, but the Young Lions hit back just before the break through Dael Fry.

Then England turned the final on its head. Having already got the better of Jorge Sanchez on two occasions, Nketiah sped past Mexico’s right back once more and squared for Dowell to finish into the bottom corner.

Mexico piled on the pressure but Paul Simpson’s side held out to win their third consecutive Toulon Tournament title, with Nketiah our third player to lift the trophy in that time after Calum Chambers and Rob Holding were triumphant in 2016.
