Dubai Super Cup: State of play, and how we can win

Arsenal line up ahead of the game against Lyon

Today sees us face AC Milan in our second and final game of the Dubai Super Cup, as we aim to claim the silverware and complete a useful trip to the region.

Our 3-0 victory against Lyon, as well as success in the subsequent penalty shootout, means we racked up a maximum four points from our opening matchday, and puts us in pole position to finish top of the table come the tournament's conclusion.

What's happened since

Lyon celebrate a goal against Liverpool

Following our win over Lyon, the French side took on Liverpool on Sunday, and recorded an impressive 3-1 win over the Reds.

Fabio Carvalho had given Jurgen Klopp's men the lead within the first minute, and they had a golden chance to double their advantage but Mohamed Salah missed a penalty after 15 minutes.

They were made to pay for that mistake when Alexandre Lacazette equalised just before half-time, and after the Reds introduced some of the younger members of their squad in the second half, further goals from Bradley Barcola and Lacazette claimed victory for Lyon.

They then triumphed 5-3 on penalties to also claim a four-point haul, although that is after the completion of their two games.

AC Milan face us in their first game on Tuesday, before they take on Liverpool on Friday to round off the tournament.

The table

  P W D L GD Pen Pts
Arsenal 1 1 0 0 3 1 4
Lyon 2 1 0 1 -1 1 4
AC Milan 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
Liverpool 1 0 0 1 -2 0 0

How we can win

Gabriel celebrates scoring against Lyon

We need three points from our game against the Italians to be assured of finishing top of the table. That could come via a victory after 90 minutes, or even picking up two points for a draw, and then winning the penalty shootout and picking up a bonus point.

A draw but loss on spot-kicks may also be enough, should Milan fail to pick up the maximum four points from their final game against Liverpool.
