Chambers – Let’s take this momentum on

Chambers

Once again Calum Chambers played a big part at both ends of the pitch, as we rounded off the season with our fifth consecutive league win.

Selected again at right back, he helped us keep a clean sheet, while also providing an assist for Nicolas Pepe to open the scoring in the second half.

Ultimately the season may have finished in disappointment as we missed out on European qualification, but Calum sees plenty to encourage him ahead of next season.

Here’s what he said after the 2-0 win over Brighton…

on the mixed emotions of winning but missing out on Europe…

Obviously very disappointing. I think we are disappointed with the season as a whole, it’s not where we wanted to finish and be. Obviously we need to focus on that next season and we need to change, but despite that we’ve finished the season strong, so there’s some motives to take into next season. We will take the momentum with how we’ve finished the league and take that into the start of next season.

on Pepe’s performance…

Brilliant. Brilliant. He was covering me defensively, which is amazing! I think he’s improved a lot, he’s a great player and we’ve seen it from the start in the first day of training, we’ve seen his quality, and I think now he’s really starting to show everyone what he can do. We’re all delighted for him.

on whether we will see the best of Pepe next season…

Yeah, I think he’s on good form at the minute and he’s been playing really well and scoring good goals and his confidence is high. We’ve seen that all along and we’ve known the quality that he’s had and it’s just really nice to see him show everyone else what he can do.

on how much he’s enjoying his football at the moment…

I’m loving it, yeah. Obviously it was a long spell on the sidelines with an injury for me, so to come back and almost feel like how I felt before I got injured, I felt like I was in good form and the injury was unfortunate timing, so to come back and feel strong like I did before, I’m really happy, so I will keep myself fit and strong over the summer and attack next season.

on ending the season with five consecutive Premier League wins…

We’ve built up some momentum now and it’s nice to get a win on the last day to almost take that into the start of next season, so we need to keep this momentum going.

on the feeling of having fans back…

Yeah, amazing. It was amazing to see the fans back. We’ve missed them massively so to have them back in the stadium is great to see and we all loved it today.
