We get our away campaign in the Premier League up and running this Saturday, with a trip Aston Villa.
Our first three away games are all against other teams that finished in last season’s top five - we head to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and the Etihad Stadium next month – but our form on the road in the Premier League over the past couple of years should give us plenty of cause for optimism.
Top of the tree
Over the past two seasons, we have amassed 81 points from 38 games. That’s the joint-most with Manchester City, but our goal difference in those games is +48 compared to +45 for City. There is a big gap to the next most successful away team over the same time period, that’s Liverpool with 57 points.
We have also kept the most away clean sheets in each of the past two top-flight seasons, 10 in 2022/23 and 11 in 2023/24. Those 21 clean sheets are more than we managed in away games for the previous four seasons combined.

RECORD BREAKERS
Our away campaign last season was one of the best in our history. We won 13 of 19 games on the road in the Premier League, and only twice have we won more than that. In the 2001/02 title season we were unbeaten away (the first side to ever do this in the Premier League era) and won 14 matches. We also won 14 in 1930/31, but from 21 away games that season.
Indeed both of our last two away campaigns are among the best in our all-time league history. We remain the only side to have gone through an entire Premier League season without losing away from home, and we've done it twice (2001/02 and 2003/04).
Our tally of 43 away goals last season was also the most we have ever mustered from 19 matches on the road, and third most overall. And we conceded just 13, which was the fifth best away defensive record in our history.
Season | Away games | Away wins | Away points* |
2001/02 | 19 | 14 | 47 |
1930/31 | 21 | 14 | 47 |
2023/24 | 19 | 13 | 42 |
2003/04 | 19 | 11 | 41 |
1998/99 | 19 | 12 | 40 |
2022/23 | 19 | 12 | 39 |
2004/05 | 19 | 12 | 39 |
1932/33 | 21 | 11 | 38 |

VIVA VILLA PARK
We go into Saturday’s match on a nine-match unbeaten run of Premier League away fixtures, winning eight, drawing the other, while keeping seven clean sheets in the process. We last went 10 successive matches without defeat on the road in 2016, when we stretched the run to 12.
We could make club history this weekend though if we don’t fall behind at any point. If so, it will be the first time in the Premier League era that we have played 10 away games in a row without trailing at any stage.
We could potentially break another club record too. We have won 14 times at Villa Park in the Premier League, where we have won more often than anywhere else in the division (currently joint with Selhurst Park).
We have won 51 points away at Villa so far, only taking more against West Ham in our PL history:
Opposition | P | W | D | L | Pts | PPG |
West Ham | 28 | 15 | 10 | 3 | 55 | 1.96 |
Aston Villa | 29 | 14 | 9 | 6 | 51 | 1.76 |
Everton | 32 | 13 | 9 | 10 | 48 | 1.50 |
Newcastle | 29 | 13 | 8 | 8 | 47 | 1.62 |
Chelsea | 32 | 10 | 9 | 13 | 39 | 1.22 |
Fulham | 17 | 12 | 1 | 4 | 37 | 2.18 |
Man City | 27 | 11 | 4 | 12 | 37 | 1.37 |
